When C.Leanord Woolley, with his team, excavated the cemetery in 1927, they found that there was only two cemeteries that were on top of each other. The graves on the top of one cemetery was thought to be dated around 2300 B.C, and below these same graves were graves that were three hundred years older. The extraordinary thing about the bottom cemetery was that among those graves were the 'Royal Tombs'.
